Fulham Gladius – A Transitional Roman Sword

The Fulham Gladius, often classified as a Mainz-Fulham type, represents a transitional stage in Roman sword design during the early 1st century AD. This Deepeeka reproduction is inspired by the original find now preserved in the British Museum, offering a historically grounded interpretation of one of the most significant Roman swords discovered in Britain.

The Fulham gladius dates to the early Roman presence in Britain, following the invasion of 43 AD. It represents a period of rapid military expansion, where Roman weapon design evolved toward greater efficiency in close combat.

This type bridges the gap between:

• The Mainz type (earlier, more waisted blade)
• The Pompeii type (later, straighter blade)

This model draws direct inspiration from the Fulham gladius discovered near the River Thames and housed in the British Museum.

The surviving original consists primarily of the blade and scabbard fittings, with organic components such as the grip and wood core having decomposed over time. Modern reconstructions, including this piece, are based on archaeological evidence combined with historical research.

The blade of the Fulham gladius reflects a transition between earlier and later Roman sword types:

• Retains the long, acute stabbing point of the Mainz type
• Features more parallel edges, anticipating the Pompeii type
• Narrower and more controlled profile for efficient thrusting

This combination makes it a highly effective close-combat weapon, designed primarily for thrusting while retaining cutting capability.
